Optimal Aging : next week’s class Jonathan Insel 29 Jan 2026 18:25 MST

Thank you for attending our first class. It was super great fun for me personally.

I want to respond to Larry’s question, “Is atherosclerosis reversible?”
What the lipid lowering drugs do is stabilize the existing plaque, thereby conferring less risk of forming a thrombus (a clot) and mitigating the risk of a heart attack or stroke. The drugs also prevent additional cholesterol plaque build up .
One day we will start lipid lowering much earlier in life , potentially by editing a gene that blocks PCSK-9 (Verve Therapeutics) or by a daily pill that blocks PCSK-9 (Merck) , thereby eliminating atherosclerosis altogether.

Next week we are excited to welcome Dr. Jennie Gubner who is presenting : Fostering Creative Ecosystems for Healthy Aging.
She holds a PHD from the UCLA Dept of Ethnomusicology and is a Senior Atlantic Fellow for Equity in Brain Health. She is a socially engaged interdisciplinary scholar, violinist, and visual ethnographer.

Thank you again for joining this journey with Kathie and me.

Best regards,
Jonathan and Kathie
