Hello all,
We three SGLs, Carlos, Mona and Pat, are happy that you are joining us for Reading the News of the World. In order to have thorough reviews of news articles, and yet make it possible for everyone to have a chance to contribute, we have experimented with various options and have developed the following format for this class.
> These topics will be discussed during the first few minutes of the 5/13/26 class:
>
> 1. Selection of articles for presentation: use recent ones, mostly about world news, something you can summarize in 10 minutes or less. Avoid articles that are primarily about US politicians or US political parties. We will suggest some possible publications but welcome you to report on articles of your choosing.
>
> 2. Present and discuss in a way that avoids alienation of participants with opposing views. One way of maintaining civil discourse is by focusing on the facts.
>
> 3. No more than 10 minutes per individual presentation, a timer will be used and a warning will be given 1 minute before time is out.
>
> 4. Following each article presentation, there will be a group discussion of no more than 5 minutes for participants’ questions and comments - a timer will be used. Individuals are asked to limit their comments to about 30 seconds.
>
> 5. Please have your camera on at least when you are speaking. As usual with zoom, be aware that the camera can catch unintended glimpses of people standing behind you, and of you if you stand up.
>
> 6. Generally stay muted to prevent background noise (e.g. phone conversation or barking dog) from coming into the meeting. Raise your mechanical hand when you want to speak, and then unmute yourself when you are asked to speak - more explanation about how to use the mechanical hand, the camera icon and the mute/unmute button will be provided in the first meeting.
>
> 7. Five different participants will present per week. We will take turns and everyone will be encouraged to do one or two presentations during the semester. Volunteer at the beginning of each class for the next week’s presentations. After the class is over, choose your article and email a link to the article to the SGL, at least 2 days before you present it, so they can email it on to the class. If there is a map or picture you believe would be helpful to show on the screen during your presentation, take a screenshot or use some other method to get it into a format such as JPEG or PDF and send it along with your link to the article. The SGL will be able to “share” it during the Zoom meeting.
8. For May 13, Carlos, Mona, Pat and Lisa Campbell will do presentations.
>
> 9. Links to the articles that will be presented will be sent to all participants, that will allow you to read them.
>
> 10. Explanations about how to email your articles link to the SGL, and how to use the link once it is passed on to you by the SGL, will be covered during the first class.
>
> We look forward to seeing you on May 13.
